This is a lovely day and the water is calm. We have services in the officers' dining room at 10:30 a.m. Both rooms were filled; and, in the evening we had a special service in memorial for our dead colonel. All of us not on duty attended. The chaplain preached a very good sermon and also gave us a short history of the colonel's life. The services lasted two hours. We had special music for this solemn occasion. Although no tears were shed, we all feel that we have lost our best officer and commander in the regiment and we feel sorry for the wide and all those who are so dear to him. Colonel Hawkins was born in Washington, D.C. in 1843. He graduated at Waynesburg in 1860. During this year he enlisted as a private in te 4th Cavalry and before the end of the civil war, which lasted four years, he was a captain. Then he went into the National Guard where he was captain of H Company of the 10th Pennsylvania Regiment. This he held until 1876 when he was elected colonel of the regiment. He held all during the Hispano (Spanish) and the Filipino outbreak, until on upon the regiment's return he died quietly in his stateroom on the Senator. At 11:40 p.m. The weather is lovely all day. We have services morning and evening in the social hall. We haven't any change in the weather at all and no change on board the ship. Our dick list are all doing fine. This is July the 29th. Up until last night we seen the first ship since leaving Yokohama. We are averaging about 11 knots per hour and are expecting to see "Frisco" on Thursday August 1st. The sea is pretty calm.
